Sicily is a land of deep religious traditions linked to popular Catholicism. In the winter of 2020, the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic prompted the Italian government to adopt "Urgent measures for the containment and management of the epidemiological emergency due to COVID-19", to control the spread of the plague. The measures included, among other things, the prohibition of meetings, i.e. static or itinerant aggregation of groups of people gathered for any reason, and of demonstrations and events, and consequently the cessation of all public religious celebrations. After the patrimonial destruction that took place during the Civil War of 1936-1939 in the city of Cartagena, religious art and especially sacred sculpture, is greatly affected. The artistic expressions that the Passionist entities took to the streets on the days of Holy Week, disappear almost in their entirety, having to start a tremendously costly reconstruction process in order to alleviate the losses suffered. The Cofradía California commissioned the renovation of its sculptural patrimony heritage, which came to replace the wealth of the works of Salzillo, to the Valencian artist Mariano Benlliure Gil. The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the <i>Semana Santa Marinera</i> processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. The liturgy is the essence of life in every Church and every monastery. Before the Council of Trent the liturgical life was very rich. Every diocese and many orders introduced to the Roman Liturgy some specific characteristics and rites. The Knights of the Holy Sepulchre had their own liturgy called “rite of the church of the Christ’s tomb”. It was a Roman-Gallican rite originated mainly in central France, adapted to the customs of Jerusalem. The study of the liturgy of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre from Nysa allows to highlight some specific characteristics of it.
